Friends of the Library Development and Services (FLDS) Award

Description & Purpose

This award is made possible by an endowment through the Friends of the Library Development and Services (FLDS) Fund to support collaborative research between students and faculty in the MLIS Program at St. Catherine University on a topic that is explicitly related to library and information science. The number of awards disbursed each year may vary, and the amount of funding may vary as well. The funds may be used for the following: supplies, books, travel, or stipend.


Conditions for the Award

Before applying for this award, students must:

  • Have completed LIS 7050 (Research Methods) or LIS 7920 (Information Seeking Behavior) or an equivalent research methods course elsewhere.
  • Plan research project with an MLIS faculty member who agrees to collaborate with you (indicated by signature on proposal).
  • Not have been previously awarded an FLDS scholarship.
  • Student(s) and collaborating faculty member meet with Deb Torres to discuss budget planning.

Upon receiving the award, recipients must: 

  • Have proposals approved by the St Kate’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) or plan to submit an IRB application if they propose to use human subjects.
  • Complete the proposed research by the close of the academic year following the award of the scholarship. 
  • Present research findings by publishing an article in a professional journal, presenting at a professional conference, and/or presenting to a local community audience impacted by the research.
  • Submit a research report of approximately 500 to 1,000 words within six weeks from completion of the research to the MLIS Program’s Student Services Committee.

Selection & Criteria

The MLIS Student Services Committee disburses the award in conjunction with a selection committee comprised of faculty, administrative staff and a representative member of the Friends of the Library Development and Services. Awards will be made based on the following criteria: 

  • Quality of research proposal
  • Intellectual and practical significance of research
  • Relevance to library and information science
  • Clear specification of the role of the student(s) and the faculty member(s) in the research project
  • Clear dissemination plan
  • Budget appropriate to project needs

Project Proposal

All proposals should be submitted in APA style, not exceed 2,500 words, and contain the following:  

  • Application form: project title; student and faculty information; a brief description of the role of student(s) and faculty; faculty signature; total budget; abstract (approximately 200 words) 
  • Problem statement
  • Abbreviated literature review 
  • Methods section, describing plans for data collection and analysis, reference list
  • Timeline for completion of project
  • Detailed budget and rationale for the funds requested
  • Dissemination plan 
  • Unofficial transcript(s) 

Submission Guidelines 

  • Proposals must be prepared by the student.
  • Faculty members listed as collaborators in the proposals must read and agree to participate prior to submission.
