2016-2017 Annual Awards for Research and Creative Work

Sponsored by the Abigail Quigley McCarthy Center for Women

CATEGORIES OF AWARDS
Five separate awards of $800 and a certificate are available to:
·         undergraduate students enrolled during all or part of the 2016-2017 academic year in a St. Catherine University program on either campus;

·         graduate students enrolled during all or part of the 2016-2017 academic year in a St. Catherine University program on either campus;

·         faculty or staff members currently employed by the University;

·         alumnae/i who graduated in May 2016 or earlier;

·         collaborative: (a) across award categories 1-4 (e.g. SCU undergraduate student/SCU faculty) or (b) with a collaborator outside SCU (e.g. community partner). 
An awards committee of St. Catherine faculty members judges submissions in each of the categories separately.  In their deliberations the judges may use consultants. 

GUIDELINES FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS

  • Research and creative work* should have a focus on women, gender, or issue(s) relevant to diverse women’s status or concerns.

  • Work must have been created, revised, or completed within three years before the competition deadline. For all categories except alumnae/i, the work must have been completed while the author was enrolled at/employed by St. Catherine University.

  • Only one submission per person per year will be accepted.  Past award recipients must wait three years to submit again.

  • Excerpts and papers derived from published books, book-length manuscripts, or master’s theses may be submitted (papers must be between 3 and 25 pages, not including citations); books, manuscripts, or theses in entirety will not be accepted as entries.

  • Written submissions should be word-processed and saved on MS WORD (not PDF). Please note: Submitter’s name must be omitted from the pages of the submitted work. 

  • The cover pages provided with these guidelines should be completed and attached to the submitted work. Cover pages should be word-processed and saved on MS WORD (not PDF).

SUBMISSION DEADLINE 4 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2017. This is a firm deadline: late submissions will be considered only if those meeting the deadline are not selected.

RECOGNITION OF AWARDS will be presented at the annual Abigail Quigley McCarthy Center for Women Awards Celebration, 4 - 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in Rauenhorst Ballroom, Coeur de Catherine, on St. Catherine University’s St. Paul campus. Save the date!

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCH SUBMISSIONS

  • Research entries should be accompanied by a brief statement (approximately one page) to the committee indicating why the submission is consistent with the selection guidelines. Be sure to omit your name from the research work statement. In the statement, please address the following:
  1. How the research topic connects to women, gender, or issues relevant to diverse women’s status or concerns.
  2. If the submission is part of a larger work (a thesis or book, for example), what has been left out, and why.
  3. If the submission was originally written for a narrow audience (for example, experts in a discipline), how this work has relevance beyond a specialized field.

  • Criteria for evaluation of research submissions:
  1. Content fits award criterion of focus on women, gender, or issues relevant to diverse women’s status or concerns.
  2. Subject is explored in sufficient depth.
  3. Writing is award level and demonstrates excellence. Cohesiveness and clarity are appropriate for the apparent purpose of the piece.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR CREATIVE SUBMISSIONS

  • Creative work submission also must include a statement (approximately one page) describing the piece submitted.  This may take the form of an artist’s statement, a statement of how the piece came to be, a discussion of the context for the piece, or a basic description of motivation and content. Please be sure to omit your name from the creative work statement.

  • Poetry
    • All types and lengths of poems are eligible for consideration.
    • Submissions should consist of one to ten poems, typed single- or double-spaced on one side of the page.

  • Prose
o   Nonfiction or fiction in the form of essay, short story, performance, or excerpts from novels may be submitted for consideration.
o   Please limit the number of pages to no less than 3 and no more than 25.

  • Visual and Recording Arts
o   Submit original work, if possible, to the Abigail Quigley McCarthy Center for Women located in Coeur de Catherine room 230, on St. Catherine University’s St. Paul campus.
o   If not, submit digitally captured images, photographs, or a PowerPoint presentation on CD-ROM in “.jpeg” or “.mpeg” format.
o   Lyrics and music may be submitted as a “.wav” or “.mp3” file via email or on a    CD-ROM with a completed submission form.
o   Please limit submissions to no less than 3 minutes and no more than 30 minutes.

  • Criteria for evaluation of creative submissions:
1.    Content fits award criterion of focus on women, gender, or issues relevant to diverse women’s status or concerns.
2.    Work is engaging, i.e. appealing and/or provocative.
3.    Creative skill is award level and demonstrates excellence.
