Presentation on Inclusivity & Indie Authors Tuesday Sept, 13, 2016

Join us for the first presentation of the Fall Semester:
Inclusivity & Indie Authors: The Case for Community-Based Publishing. Tuesday September 13, 2016 at 7 pm in Mendel 106, Saint Paul campus, St. Catherine University.

The presenters are Dr. Zetta Elliott, author and independent scholar (http://www.zettaelliot.com) and Dr. Sarah Park Dahlen, assistant professor, MLIS Program (http://sarahpark.com/).

Dr. Dahlen will start off the presentation by discussing the results of the 2015 Diversity Baseline Survey in Publishing, which she administered. In January 2016, Lee & Low Books released the results of the survey that showed publishing is both very white and very female.

Dr. Elliott then will speak about how racism and power affect the publishing industry. As a black feminist, Dr. Elliott advocates for a model of community-based publishing that uses print-on-demand technology to transfer power from the industry to those excluded from the publishing process, thus envisioning a more diverse and inclusive literary world. She is the author of thirty books for adults, teens, and children. She is an award-winning independent scholar with a PhD in American Studies from NYU.

This event is co-hosted by Ancestry Books, University of Minnesota Libraries Archie Givens, Sr. Collection of African American Literature/Umbra: Search African American History, Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy, Bancroft Elementary School, The Loft Literary Center, Minnesota Humanities Center, and the St. Catherine University Master of Library and Information Science Program and its American Library Association Student Chapter, Progressive Librarians Guild, and Student Governance Organization.
