ALA 2017 Scholarship Application Opens September 1

If you need a bit of financial help to get through your graduate program, scholarship funds are now available.  The American Library Association (ALA) has more than $300,000 available to students who are studying in library science or school library media programs at the master's degree level.  Get your application in early.  The deadline to apply is March 1, 2017.

Digitization and Metadata Internship with Hennepin County Library

The Special Collections Department of the Hennepin County Library is seeking two interns to perform a variety of scanning and image editing functions for the Library’s digitization program, and also to create metadata for an historic events program collections.  This is an unpaid internship.  Duties include digital scanning of a variety of materials formats using multiple equipment types, image editing using Irfanview, creating metadata using MS Excel spreadsheets, and minor preservation treatments.  Some experience with digital scanning and MS Excel is desirable, but not required.  The internship is a 100-120 hour assignment and will begin late September continuing into December.  8-10 hours per week, M-Th workdays.

Preservation Internship with Hennepin County Library

The Preservation Department of the Hennepin County Library is seeking one or two interns to assist in an effort to conserve historic county plat maps. This is an unpaid internship. Duties will include map encapsulation, cutting backing sheets, data entry, photography, and other duties as needed. Requirements include a steady hand, attention to detail, the ability to work independently as well as to work in cooperation with others. An interest in book and paper preservation will be helpful. Internship will begin mid to late September and continue to project completion, likely early spring 2017. 8-20 hours per week, M-F workdays.

Calls for Entry for the 2016-17 Caxton Club Grants

Since 2002, the Caxton Club has awarded thirty-nine recipients grants totaling over $60,000.

The Club, founded in 1895 in Chicago, is devoted to the literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books.

For the 2016-17 academic year, Caxton Club grants are being offered to Midwestern graduate students with projects in the following areas: bibliography, book arts, history of the book, library studies, print culture studies, and zines

For the second year, there is also a grant for a School of the Art Institute of Chicago undergraduate student with a project in book arts, and a scholarship for a Rare Book School student in the Midwest.

Consulting Archivist for the Museum of Lake Minnetonka

The Museum of Lake Minnetonka is accepting applications for a Consulting Archivist. The Museum owns the historic “Streetcar Steamboat” Minnehaha, which was raised from the depths of Lake Minnetonka and restored by volunteers. Each summer Minnehaha is staffed by crews of volunteers who give living history tours of the lake. 

The Museum has been accumulating materials about the early history of the streetcar steamboats, the raising of Minnehaha, its restoration, and some artifacts. However, none of this material has been properly stored, organized, or cataloged; thus our request for professional assistance.

Reshelving Books Following Renovation

  • What: Following the installation of new bookshelves this summer, books will need to be transferred from the old shelves to the new shelves in preparation for our grand opening on August 24th. Tasks may involve lifting books, arranging books on the shelf, and/or light cleaning.
  • Why: To transform our media center into a space where 21st century learning can occur. Join us for this one-time opportunity to make a huge difference in the rejuvenation of our media center and school!

Paired with the need to consolidate to accommodate our new bookshelves, you can help us dramatically by leaning our resources!
