Tennessee Coordinator of Technical Services

Volpe Library at Tennessee Tech University invites applications for an innovative, energetic and collaborative Coordinator of Technical Services to lead, coordinate, and administer the Library's Technical Services Department, encompassing Acquisitions, Electronic Resources/Serials, Government Documents, and Cataloging/Metadata Services. The Coordinator of Technical Services will also be responsible for developing and leading a new data curation effort. The position manages a staff of eight engaged in procurement, organization, description, and maintenance of library materials in all formats and online access to information for effective discovery and delivery to library patrons.

Call for Submissions for Student Research Journal

Are you pursuing a career as a librarian or information professional and need to find a way to stand out among the crowded field of applicants for entry-level positions? Have you taken a course in research methodology or other courses in library and information science, archives and records management, or museum studies that required you to produce a significant work of scholarship in the field? Have you considered joining the scholarly conversation through publication in a peer-reviewed, open access journal?
The San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Information has been helping graduate students gain valuable experience in navigating the scholarly publishing process since 2011 through the SJSU iSchool Student Research Journal (SRJ). With full administrative and faculty support, SRJ is a permanent online showcase for graduate scholarship in the field.

We invite you to submit your manuscript and experience the satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from being accepted for publication in a quality, peer-reviewed, graduate student journal. The opportunity to offer evidence of your active role as a scholar and your engagement with your peers will also set you apart and serve as a valuable experience that will help you to succeed in the increasingly multifaceted field of library and information science.

Announcing SEI 2015!

In its twelfth year as a joint program between the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF), the annual Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management will be held at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign from June 9-12, 2015.  See

SEI is an intensive workshop featuring a curriculum that specifically addresses the requirements of today's professional, including hands-on and lecture modules. Expert instructors cover intellectual property rights, the digital life cycle, metadata and cataloging, essential tools of image management, digital preservation, and uses of images in digital humanities. Attendees also enjoy an opportunity to discuss and brainstorm on a range of issues, from new media and marketing visual resources to future career roles, during the ThinkCamp interactive session planned for the final afternoon of SEI.

The SEI curriculum is suited to information professionals new to the field, those currently enrolled in library schools who wish to gain image management training, and more experienced professionals eager to respond to fast-changing technological advancements and job requirements. Individuals with a range of professional roles have benefited from past SEIs, including visual resources professionals, university and public librarians, archivists, and museum professionals responsible for image rights and reproductions.

The Position
Develop programs, services and resources to support literacy initiatives at Northeast Library. This internship will provide practical experience inside a public library through exposure to programs, reference, and collection management. It is an excellent opportunity for students in youth services librarianship or for those who have completed their Masters in Library Science to gain experience in the field.

This unpaid internship is for one semester, February -  May 2015, 8-12 hours a week (variable) for 120 hours. It can be used for college credit or work experience. Hours are Monday - Friday afternoons and evenings as well as Saturdays.

Augsburg College invites applicants for the position of Acquisitions/Serials Coordinator.  The Coordinator performs the procurement function for library materials in all formats so that students and faculty have access to current relevant library resources.  The Coordinator also manages the library’s serials holdings.

The position begins January 26, 2015.  This position is 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week) with full benefits included.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to pay attention to details, be accurate, be skillful with numbers, follow established procedures, work independently, solve problems, and multi-task.  The successful candidate will have experience with library and vendor online databases used for ordering and managing library materials and/or experience managing serials.  The candidate should have an understanding of online accounting systems which help manage finances.

Minnesota Reading Corps Volunteer Coordinator

I am the Minnesota Reading Corps Volunteer Coordinator at Obama Elementary in St. Paul, and we need volunteers to help keep our library organized! The goal of Minnesota Reading Corps is to close the achievement gap in Minnesota and get all students statewide reading proficiently by grade 3. Needless to say, this is difficult to do when the library is in disarray. 

Our librarian needs help shelving books and shelf reading in order to keep the library tidy and functioning. I am wondering if any of your MLIS students may be interested in this service opportunity to volunteer in a local elementary school library.

Registration is limited to no more than 475 total participants. Once this level of participation is reached, registration will be CLOSED! Please register early in order to ensure your spot at the conference.
This year's Library Technology Conference is again intended to provide an opportunity for library professionals and the technologists who support them to discuss the technologies that are affecting library services; to see examples of what libraries are doing with these technologies; and to provide a venue where participants can learn specific skills or knowledge that they can take back and adapt for use within their own libraries. The number of conference participants will be limited to no more than 475 in order to help ensure a quality conference experience and to help facilitate the interactive and hands-on nature of many of the sessions.
The two-day conference features two keynote speakers, Bohyun Kim and Courtney Greene McDonald, and will also include more than 60 conference sessions – traditional lecture-style sessions, hands-on/workshop sessions, interactive technology dialogue sessions, and poster sessions. A wide range of library technology-related topics will be covered during Lib Tech 2015 sessions.

2015 Read Brave-Saint Paul Public Library

 Saint Paul Public Library has selected How It Went Down by Kekla Magoon as its 2015 Read Brave book. Read Brave is the library’s annual, citywide program encouraging youth and adults to read and come together around a young adult novel. The program encourages intergenerational dialog about thought-provoking contemporary issues facing teens and culminates with a visit by the author. Wilder Foundation Library Assistant

The Wilder Foundation is hiring a full-time Library Assistant. Responsibilities will include cataloging, conducting literature searches, and assisting library customers. We are looking for a current MLIS student or recent graduate, or someone with a minimum of four years of special library experience.
The Amherst H. Wilder Foundation is a St. Paul-based nonprofit community organization that helps children, families, and older adults through direct service programs, research, leadership development, and community building. The library is based within Wilder Research, the research arm of the Foundation that works with organizations to study the effectiveness of their services and the trends and issues that affect their work. LIS 7961 G01 CRN 23916 Topics: Advanced Web Design with Nick Steffel. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8:30pm.
Course Description:  This course examines the emerging standards of HTML 5 and CSS 3 and the new web development functionalities, techniques and challenges that they present. Students will also gain a basic understanding of JavaScript and examine new application programming interfaces (APIs) for including features such as geolocation, shape and image rendering and file system interaction within a website. These different technologies will be incorporated into a final website project where students take a traditional website, identify areas for enhancement or improvement, and develop an improved version.  Prerequisites: LIS 7530.

Course Description In this course we will explore Graphic Novels and Comics in libraries for all ages with an emphasis on children and young adult titles. We will study collection development, programming, the history of graphics, and censorship.  Students will also learn about manga, superheroes and webcomics and how they fit in public, school, and academic libraries. MLIS Capstone Course Presentations TONIGHT!

All are welcome to attend the MLIS Capstone Course Presentations on Monday, December 8, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Jeanne d'Arc Auditorium, Whitby Building, St. Paul Campus, St. Catherine University.

Six teams of MLIS students will be presenting on their projects for community partners: Ramsey County Correctional Facility, MN Department of Education State Library Services, AFSME Council 5 Minnesota, American Craft Council Library and Archive, Rondo Education Center, and St. Catherine University Libraries.

Join us for the 3rd Annual Lake Superior Libraries Symposium Mid-Winter Unsymposium, where you determine the conversation. Registration is now open! Sometimes you need to take a break from the average conference. You've seen all the PowerPoint slides and the session topics are as stale as the coffee. Often, the informal conversations that pop up along the sidelines of the conference are the best part.
At the LSLS Unsymposium, the sidelines are the conference. Topics are determined in a bottom-up, democratic manner, rather than being handed down from on high. Everyone wants to talk about discovery layers? Done. You’re the only one who wants to talk about spacing on spine labels? Too bad.
